“To see from the top, you have to go through the spiral of the stairs, perhaps you might feel tired during the climb or you might face the fear of heights, but if you give up, the exhaustion and fear that you have encountered would go down the drain. Only when you continue to move forward, you would never regret making such efforts when you see the astonishing view from the rooftop.”
Ely’s Cathedral offers worship for nearly 1,400 years. You can reach the top of the tower by going through the West Tower of the church. There is a total of more than a hundred steps to reach the top of the tower. The cathedral has its origins in AD 672 when St Etheldreda built an abbey church. From the early days, it has attracted many pilgrims.Unfortunately, the central tower collapsed in 1322.
So most of the stairs of the tower are very old, but we could see some staircases are looking new due to the repair. The spiral-like tower is very narrow and it only can fit a person at a time. Thus, we had to be extra vigilant while climbing up the stairs and were trying to step on the larger area of the staircase.
During that half an hour of hardship, we felt like giving up. However, due to the limited space, we were caught in the middle of the visitors. So, instead of giving up and causing all the efforts completely wasted, we had to endure our fear and exhaustion.
Due to the narrow tower, some people who suffered from claustrophobia might feel trapped. However, once we reached the rooftop of the tower, we felt that it was totally worth the efforts when we saw the beautiful scenery and high-density housing.
